Fresh look, improved formula

We have made the following improvements to CompleteMe Renal Feline:

  • The freeze-dried venison fillet has been removed. This is primarily to allow all cats with food allergies, including cats allergic to ruminant protein, to safely use the product. Please also see below for more information on this change.
  • Astaxanthin from organic marine algae has been added - a potent antioxidant with new research supporting its use for patients with kidney disease. Lutein has been removed.
  • Australian blue mussel has been added, and New Zealand green-lipped mussel has been removed. Testing has shown that Australian blue mussel is a more concentrated source of the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA.
  • Yeast fermentate (a postbiotic) has been added. Postbiotics may reduce uraemic toxins and support gut health in cats with kidney disease.

All other ingredients and benefits remain the same, and the dose per kilogram of food has remained the same.

With respect to the removal of the wild venison fillet, this decision also reflects emerging research suggesting that meat from certain game animals, including wild rabbit, venison, and goat (and excluding kangaroo), may in some instances contain lead ammunition fragments. Based on current information, occasional exposure is not generally considered likely to result in adverse effects; however, the implications of regular, long-term consumption as a consistent dietary component are not yet fully understood and may warrant caution. The available evidence in the pet nutrition context remains limited and continues to develop. We will monitor new research and update our formulations or guidance as appropriate.

Key benefits

Omega-3 fatty acids from Australian blue mussels

Betafin® natural betaine

Assists with weight maintenance and has been shown to have osmoprotective effects in the kidney. We only include natural (not synthetic) betaine, derived from beets.

Astaxanthin from marine algae

Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant that reduces oxidative stress in the kidney. It also has anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic effects.

Prebiotic fibre from green banana resistant starch

May reduce production of uraemic toxins by gut bacteria. Resistant starch, in particular, may reduce serum phosphorus.

CompleteMe Renal Feline FAQs

Does this make a diet similar to commercial renal diets for cats?

Yes, when used with our feeding guides, CompleteMe Renal Feline will produce diets with a similar phosphorus content to commercial renal diets.

We have feeding guides for both early and advanced kidney disease, and the protein, fat, calcium, and phosphorus varies in the diet, depending on the stage of disease.

We try to provide a greater level of antioxidant and omega-3 enrichment in our diets, compared with commercial renal diets, and to supplement other beneficial additives like fibre and betaine.

Can I use raw meat?

Yes, CompleteMe Renal Feline can be used with raw or cooked meat, like chicken breast or thigh, kangaroo, turkey, or pork. We recommend using human-grade meat, and freezing any meat to be fed raw for a minimum of 10 days. For areas with Trichinella, please freeze pork for 3 weeks before use.

In areas with highly pathogenic avian influenza, we recommend not feeding raw poultry of any kind.

Can I add this to canned food or kibble?

No, CompleteMe Renal Feline should never be added to any type of commercial diet, including canned diets or kibble. This could result in harmful excesses of some nutrients. This product should only be used to make a homemade diet for kidney disease.

However, it is fine to feed a homemade renal diet along with a commercial renal diet, so long as both diets are appropriate and properly formulated. For example, feeding 50% Royal Canin Early Renal canned diet and 50% homemade renal diet would be fine.

Can I just add this to meat only? I don't want to follow a recipe/guide.

Our feeding guides/recipes include meat only, with some other recommended additives like omega-3 fatty acids and fibre. You don't have to add carbohydrates like rice or potato if you don't want to.

We recommend using our guides/recipes, because they explain how to combine fattier and leaner meats to achieve the preferred protein and phosphorus content for the diet.

If you add CompleteMe Renal Feline to just any meat, you may end up feeding a diet that is too low or high in protein, or too low or high in phosphorus, for your cat's medical needs.

My cat is allergic to chicken, can I use this?

Yes, CompleteMe Renal Feline does not contain any poultry protein (chicken, turkey or duck), or any egg protein. It also does not contain fish, beef, lamb, venison, dairy, pork, wheat, corn, or rice.

It does contain animal-derived protein from:

  • Blue mussels
What is the shelf-life for this product?

For our CompleteMe Renal Feline, the best-by date will be a maximum of 11-12 months. There are several, important reasons for this.

As our products contain freeze-dried foods, we want to ensure these foods are fresh and that the fatty acids don't oxidise. Even when freeze-dried, some polyunsaturated fatty acids are at high risk of oxidation, meaning ingredients like mussel or egg yolk can become rancid.

We also understand that some vitamins degrade over time, during storage. This means we need to ensure that the product contains a safe and appropriate amount of these nutrients from the date of manufacture until the best-by date. These nutrients should not be too high initially, or too low following storage. 12 months is the maximum time we can therefore ensure optimal freshness, nutritiousness, and safety.
